Bring the Fun of Camping into Your Classroom!
Do your students love the idea of roasting marshmallows, telling campfire stories, and exploring the great outdoors? A camping theme is the perfect way to spark their imagination while keeping them engaged in reading, writing, and math! Whether you're setting up a full camping classroom transformation or just adding a few fun activities, I’ve got easy, low-prep ideas that your students will love.
And to make it even easier, I’ve created a camping-themed math and literacy packet packed with worksheets covering comprehension, writing, grammar, telling time, money, fractions, and more!
Now, let’s jump into some exciting classroom camping ideas.
1. Campfire Stories & Writing Fun
Gather your students around a “campfire” (real or pretend!) and let them create their own stories. You can:
- Use a flashlight or lantern and dim the lights for a cozy storytelling atmosphere.
- Have students pull story prompts out of a “campfire” (a decorated box or paper logs) and write creative stories.
- Encourage them to use descriptive words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) to bring their story to life!
👉 Want a quick, ready-to-go writing activity? My camping packet includes story writing prompts with pictures to get your students excited about storytelling!
2. Positional Words Tent Adventure
- Help students practice positional words (above, below, next to, inside, etc.) by creating a tent-building challenge!
- Set up small play tents or let students build their own using desks and blankets.
- Hide objects inside, under, or next to the tents, and have students describe their locations using complete sentences.
3. Camping-Themed Math Centers
Turn your math lessons into camping adventures! Try these hands-on activities:
- Telling Time to the Minute: Create a "camp schedule" and have students match times to activities (e.g., "S’mores at 6:45 PM").
- Counting Money: Set up a "camp store" where students buy camping gear (fake items with price tags) and practice making change.
- Comparing Numbers & Fractions: Use marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers to visually compare fractions!
4. Cause and Effect: A Camping Mishap!
- Help students understand cause and effect with a camping mishap challenge!
- Give students scenarios like: “You forgot to zip up your tent at night.”
- Have them write or discuss what happens next: “A raccoon sneaks in and eats your snacks!”
- You can also read a short camping-themed passage and have students identify the cause-and-effect relationships.
5. Camping-Themed Classroom Decor
- Make your room feel like an outdoor adventure with easy decorations:
- Hang string lights to mimic stars.
- Use brown butcher paper to create “logs” for a pretend campfire.
- Play nature sounds during independent work time.
- Let students sit on "camping chairs" or pillows for a relaxed reading experience!
These simple touches boost engagement and make learning extra fun!
