How to Teach Fractions 5th Grade

Dividing Fractions by Fractions on a
Number Line or with Visual Models

So why should we use number lines to teach students how to divide fractions?

Number lines help students identify fractions as a quantity, not just a top number and bottom number. They also help students learn WHY the answer is correct and makes sense.

For example, younger students easily learned that 8 divided by 2 simply meant how many groups of 2 make 8.

It is the same for dividing fractions.

2/4 divided by 1/8 simply means how many one-eighths make 2/4.

Number lines make this easy!

Here is a video showing this process:

Here is another video showing a little different way of dividing fractions on a number line by first using a common denominator:

After your students understand the PROCESS of dividing fractions, you can teach them the shortcut: Keep, Switch, Flip

Here are some FREE worksheets in printable or digital format
to get you started:

If Every Day Was Gameday - Teamwork, School Climate and Culture

how our lives would change if every day was game day

Note: This blog post contains resources from our TpT store and our Amazon Associate store.

WHO IS YOUR TEAM?

It is likely you would find very few people in the KC area that are not cheering for the Chiefs right now - at least this week! Some schools are having spirit week within their building. There is nothing that can pull people together like team spirit and a big game! Think of the reasons we do this...comradery, loyalty, commitment, common goals, and honestly, it's just plain fun!

It makes me wonder what greatness would be possible if we approached our personal and work lives in this same way - even more than we already do! Just imagine the possibilities and how life changing this would be for the people we live and work with on a daily basis! Team Orchard Hill...Team Anton (name your business/family) working together (comradery), supporting each other unconditionally (loyalty, commitment) for the common goal of learning, impacting others, and meeting the needs of people....Now, that would make life even more exciting and fun EVERY day, EVERY hour, EVERY minute!

We have so many students that jump out of their cars each day and RUN full speed into the building excited to be here, excited to learn, and so excited to see teachers and friends. It's funny to think about what it would look like if we jumped out of our cars and did that every day in our adult lives?!? LOL. But, seriously, what would that look like? How would that feel? AND how would that impact the people you live and work with...and you??? My guess is joy would skyrocket!

kids running into the school building excited for the day

We all have a need for this kind of team spirit, comradery, loyalty, commitment, and fun. This week, friends, let's approach our family, work, and interactions with each other in this same way...working together, as a team, for a common cause.....to have fun and find joy in the journey!

GO CHIEFS!
