10 Free Place Value Activities and Games
1. Place Value Bingo
How to Play: Create Bingo cards with numbers and call out “tens and ones” combinations like “5 tens and 2 ones” (52). Students mark the corresponding number on their Bingo cards.
Skills: Recognizing two-digit numbers and identifying tens and ones.
2. Roll and Build
How to Play: Students roll a die to determine the number of tens and ones, then build the number with base-ten blocks or snap cubes. Great for practicing decomposing numbers.
Skills: Composing and decomposing numbers in the tens and ones places.
3. Race to 100
How to Play: Students work in pairs to roll dice, adding the numbers and building toward 100. They trade in ten ones for a ten block as they go, reinforcing the concept of regrouping.
Skills: Adding and regrouping to reach a target number.
4. Place Value Mystery Bags
How to Play: Fill small bags with different amounts of base-ten blocks (e.g., 3 tens and 6 ones). Have students guess the number represented by the blocks, then check their answer.
Skills: Counting by tens and ones and estimating.
5. Number Line Hop
How to Play: Place a number line on the floor, and give students numbers in the tens or hundreds. Call out a starting number, then have students hop forward or backward to reach the given number.
Skills: Place value and sequencing numbers on a number line.
6. Spin and Write
How to Play: Use a spinner labeled with hundreds, tens, and ones. After each spin, students write down the digit in the respective place, building a 3-digit number by the end.
Skills: Recognizing place value and forming numbers.
7. Place Value Puzzles
How to Play: Use cards with individual digits and place value labels (ones, tens, hundreds). Challenge students to create specific numbers or match the value with the correct place.
Skills: Identifying the value of digits in different places.
8. Place Value Scoot
How to Play: Set up a series of place value cards around the classroom with different numbers or values for students to match or write down. Rotate them after each round for fast-paced learning.
Skills: Place value recognition and rapid recall.
9. Build a Number Towers
How to Play: Have students build towers with snap cubes representing different numbers. They label each stack with ones, tens, or hundreds based on its place value.
Skills: Understanding and visualizing place value.
10. Expanded Form Card Match
How to Play: Create cards with numbers in standard and expanded form. Students match the standard form to its expanded form (e.g., 153 = 100 + 50 + 3).
Skills: Recognizing expanded form and understanding number composition.
