Snowy Winter Weather Classroom Activities for Kids
Well, it is only appropriate to have today's Thursday theme be SNOW! After a mild winter last year, many were excited for our first snow of the season! My kids were cheering out the back door. Well, of course, they may also have been cheering because of cancelled school for the day. I didn't know they now name snowstorms, but this one is named Draco. As one Facebook friend posted: "So Winter Storm Draco has arrived and basically shut down the state of Iowa. Petrificus Snowtalus, indeed." LOL. If you are really interested in our winter storm names, the weather channel explains it here. I know you are all anxious to read it.
If you look closely at the chair above, it looks like a snowman has come for a heaping serving of snow for lunch. Please feel free to use the picture for your creative writing center as a story starter.

Indoor Recess Games and Ideas for Kids
--------------------------------
Step 1: Freeze ice in different shaped containers.
Step 2: Students may bring in any paper cups, buckets, anything. Fill them with water and set them outside to freeze, checking to see how long it takes to become frozen. (This could also be done in a freezer.)
Step 3: The next day, empty the ice into a large plastic bin, small pool, etc. The students make ice sculptures by stacking the shapes together. Students may use flashlights to look at the different
reflections.
Step 4: Students could then go to the writing center to record their creations. You could also begin a discussion on igloos, ice homes ,etc.
--------------------------------
Step 1: Make 10 snowmen on 10 8X11 cards (oak tag or card stock). Each snowman has a number, 1 - 10, on his hat.
Step 2: Laminate or contact each card for extra durability. The snowmen are dressed with hat, scarf, carrot nose, broom, etc,
Step 3: Create a box of buttons (you may ask for donations) with a miniature copy of these snowmen on the cover.
Step 4: Students will match the number of buttons to the number on the hat. If the snowman has a 6 on his hat, then the child has to put 6 buttons on the snowman.
The students really enjoy this activity, and it works great for the math center! If you would rather have a printable version of this game to save time, just click on the picture below:

Another activity the students really enjoy is a matching game. It could be used for any occasion. For winter, choose 5 or six "winter things" like a snowman, scarf, hat, mittens, galoshes, etc, and make a graph. Use five colors across the top (red, yellow, orange, blue and green) and the six objects down the side. Then, color each object in each color. For example, the scarf would have five identical black and white scarves, and then color each in one of the colors. There would be a scarf to match across the entire row. That would be true for each object. If you have five objects and five colors, you would have 25 cards. Then, the students have to match the red mittens, for example, to the correct box on the graph. This activity is good for tracking and problem solving.
