SQ3R Reading Strategy

Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review (SQ3R) is a study strategy that students may use throughout the reading process.

QUESTION

READ

RECITE

REVIEW

Students first preview text in order to make predictions and generate questions that help direct their reading. As students read, they actively search for answers to their questions. When they have finished reading, they summarize what they have read and review their notes while monitoring and evaluating their own comprehension. 

Step 1: 

Select an unfamiliar reading selection. The text shouldn't be too long and should include headings, subheadings, graphics, boldface words, etc.

Step 2: 

Model the SQ3R strategy.

Step 3: SURVEY or SKIM

Survey the reading selection. Examine the title and discuss background knowledge/schema. Look at the headings. Ask students what more they would like to know about the topic. Examine the graphics and read the last paragraph or summary section.

Step 4: QUESTION

Develop one or two QUESTIONS based on the information obtained during the survey.

Step 5: READ

Read the reading selection. Use context clues to help with unfamiliar words. Students may develop new questions on unclear terms, additional information needed, etc.

Step 6: RECITE

Record the answers to the questions developed while surveying and reading the selection.

Step 7: REVIEW

Answer question at the end of the selection. If there are no questions provided, summarize the selection by writing main ideas and giving an overview of the graphics provided. Student may also share their questions and answers for a group review.
